McMenamin Engineering Expands into Modular Balcony Manufacturing

McMenamin Engineering is proud to announce a significant expansion to our product range, fully manufactured modular balcony systems. Building on over 40 years of engineering experience, this natural evolution of our capabilities is a direct response to the growing demand for off-site construction methods that deliver quality solutions, faster installation, and reduced disruption on-site.

Modern Methods of Construction

Our modular balcony systems embrace Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), prioritising off-site manufacturing to improve quality control, accelerate project timelines, and minimise environmental impact. Each balcony is designed, manufactured and assembled in our workshops, then transported to the site for rapid installation by our experienced steel erectors.

From Design to Installation

We provide a complete end-to-end balcony service. Cantilevered and supported balconies are designed in-house, manufactured in our workshops and installed on site by our steel erectors. All balcony systems are available with customisable finishes, dimensions, and balustrade options, including sleek glass panels and traditional steel railings. We work with architects and engineers, to create bespoke solutions that are fully certified to meet industry standards.

Modular Approach

Whether for new development or a renovation project, the modular approach delivers significant advantages over traditional on-site methods by reducing construction time, minimising weather delays and offering an exceptional finish.

Recent Balcony Project

We’re currently completing a residential development in Ashbourne, Co. Meath, where we designed, manufactured, and installed balconies with glass balustrades. The balconies were thoughtfully designed to enhance the building’s appearance while providing functional, practical outdoor spaces. Take a look at the progress on this site here:

McMenamin Engineering is proud to be involved in the development of Waterways Ireland’s new Craft Centre of Excellence in Tullamore, Co. Offaly. Our team successfully supplied and erected all the structural steel for this landmark facility, representing a significant investment in Ireland’s inland waterways heritage.

A Modern Hub for Waterways Craftsmanship

The new centre, located 1km east of Tullamore, will replace the existing Tullamore Harbour depot that has served as a regional base for over sixty years. When operational in June 2026, this state-of-the-art facility will bring together up to 70 team members from Operations, Mechanical & Electrical, Finance, and the Inspectorate under one roof, creating a central hub for collaboration and innovation.

Project Scope and Impact

Working with main contractor Pat Loftus Construction, we are supplying the complete structural steel framework for this project. The development includes carpentry and mechanical craft workshops, a modern administrative building, yard areas, hardstanding, and supporting infrastructure. The project will help to safeguard employment and traditional crafts in the region for years to come.

The relocation also enables ambitious regeneration plans for the harbour area in Tullamore town centre, demonstrating how thoughtful infrastructure development can benefit entire communities.

Collaborative Excellence

McMenamin Engineering are working alongside Axis Architecture and Malachi Cullen Consulting Engineers Ltd to deliver this complex project. Our expertise in structural steel supply and erection will ensure that the facility meets the demanding requirements of a modern operational centre. The finished building will support Waterways Ireland’s mission as custodians of over 1,100km of inland waterways and 650km of paths and cycleways.

This project delivered new galvanised steel access stairs to connect the ground level to a newly built platform over a live fish stream beside a hydro station. Due to the sensitive environment, erection planning, lifting strategies, and protective measures were carefully implemented to avoid stream disruption or contamination. The stairs were prefabricated off-site for durability and to minimise environmental risk during installation. Using mobile crane services and strict exclusion zones, the team ensured safe, efficient assembly. Completed by McMenamin Engineering in collaboration with ESB and Quinn Crane Hire, the project provided a durable, compliant, and environmentally responsible access solution.

Supporting Dublin’s Energy Infrastructure

McMenamin Engineering are pleased to have played a key role in the development of the new ESB substation at Batter Lane, Dublin, supplying and erecting high-quality structural steel frameworks for this vital energy infrastructure. We welcomed the opportunity to work on this complex project and were delighted to demonstrate our capability to deliver complex structural solutions for critical electrical installation

Our Services

Our team delivered comprehensive structural steel solutions, including the supply and erection of the structural steel and cold-rolled purlins.

From initial fabrication through to final installation, we maintained our commitment to quality workmanship at every stage of the project. Our experienced engineers and fabricators worked closely with project stakeholders to ensure all structural elements were manufactured to exact specifications and installed with precision, meeting the stringent safety and quality standards required for electrical infrastructure of this nature.

Meeting Dublin’s Growing Energy Demands

The Batter Lane substation is a critical addition to the electrical grid, designed to provide much-needed additional capacity to Dublin’s North County area. This project addresses a significant infrastructure challenge: the rapid transformation of originally rural regions and towns into thriving urban and commercial centres. As these areas of the capital city expand, their electrical demands have increased, requiring substantial investment in grid infrastructure to maintain reliable power supply.

The Challenge

Dublin North’s electricity network serves a growing population across a diverse mix of urban and rural areas. The explosive growth in customer numbers and commercial development has placed considerable strain on the existing High and Medium Voltage network infrastructure, making projects like Batter Lane essential to keeping pace with demand.

Building for the Future

As Dublin continues to expand, infrastructure projects like this ensure that businesses and residents have the reliable electrical capacity they need. We’re very pleased to contribute our expertise to supporting the region’s sustainable growth and development.

Works are continuing at the Batter Lane substation as it moves toward completion and integration into the grid, marking another milestone in our portfolio of essential infrastructure projects across Ireland.

Landmark Building

As part of the Killybegs Town Centre Regeneration, Island House has emerged as a landmark three-storey civic building at the heart of this busy Donegal fishing port. Designed to connect community, commerce, and culture, the development provides a tourist facility on the ground floor and a digital hub on the upper levels, enhancing the town’s appeal for residents, visitors, and businesses alike.

McMenamin Engineering played a central role in bringing this vision to life, supplying, detailing, and fabricating the structural steel, decking, and roof purlins. From producing detailed steel drawings to in-house fabrication of columns, beams, and bracing, every component was delivered to exacting standards. Each element was carefully modelled, coordinated, and prepared for efficient transport and assembly, ensuring a smooth and precise erection process.

Challenging Build

Working on a tight waterfront site presented significant challenges. Located at the edge of a busy pier with restricted access for deliveries and construction equipment, the project demanded meticulous planning and coordination. McMenamin Engineering implemented strict safety measures while ensuring that the speed and efficiency of installation were maintained.

The result is a striking, high-quality steel structure that reflects both technical excellence and strong collaboration. McMenamin Engineering worked closely with MDT Construction, McCabe Architects, and DSM Consulting Engineers to deliver the project on time and to the highest standards.

Civic Anchor

Island House now stands as a civic anchor for Killybegs, symbolising regeneration and growth. Its innovative steelwork underpins not only a modern, functional building but also a space that strengthens community connections and supports future economic activity.

This project showcases the power of precision steel construction in delivering complex civic buildings and highlights the vital role McMenamin Engineering played in shaping a new chapter for Killybegs.

A 25-bed Acute Mental Health Unit was added to the Sligo University Hospital Campus. This modern 3500 sq. m facility is part single-storey and part 2 storey. It is located on an elevated site within the hospital grounds, near the main hospital with a link connecting the 2 buildings.

Central Courtyard Design

The building is designed around 2 central courtyards which offer privacy for patients and staff. The floor-to-ceiling windows bring light into the contemporary living spaces and corridors and contribute to the feeling of warmth within the facility.

The unit, designed by Wejchert Architects, considered the needs of potential patients and staff and this input has resulted in a facility that is truly tailor-made for its users.

Structural Steel and Roof Purlins

McMenamin Engineering supplied and fitted the structural steel and roof purlins for this project. Working alongside Boyle Construction, this was a textbook build and we are delighted with the finished product.

Award Winning Design

Sligo Hospital Mental Health Unit has been commended in the RIAI Wellbeing Category and shortlisted for a European Healthcare Awards 2022 in the Mental Health Design category.

Ballina is set to get a new Aldi store in 2022 which will bring 30 new permanent jobs to the Co. Mayo town. The new store will also create 50 jobs during the construction phase. Parking for 90 cars, 4 EV charging stations and a bicycle stand unit are also planned for this development.

Project Fresh Design

We are delighted to be supplying the structural steel for this project which is due to be completed by the end of 2022. These changes are designed to meet Aldi’s customers increasing demands for fresh produce.
